Morning Restoration Tea: 4-Root Recipe for Natural Energy
What if I told you that the morning restoration tea I drink every day was inspired by a lesson my garden taught me about healing depleted soil? Fifteen years ago, I stood where my garden now flourishes, looking at nothing but scruffy, weedy grass scattered with rocks. My neighbors shook their heads and told me I’d never be able to grow a garden there. ‘It’s all played out,’ they said. ‘Overworked corn field.’
But my neighbors didn’t understand the value of patient, diligent restoration.
So many women feel like that overworked farmland. Maybe you’re one of them. You’ve given your best for years – to family, work, everyone who needed you. Over time, you begin to realize something is off. You’re tired in a way that sleep doesn’t fix. Maybe your digestion isn’t right, or your hormones feel out of whack, or you just don’t have the energy you used to have.
Or maybe your symptoms started after an illness or a mold exposure.

And when you finally make it to the doctor? “Your tests look normal.” Or nearly normal. But you know deep down – this isn’t normal for you.
Why I Believed in Restoration
Why did I believe in that barren spot’s potential? Maybe because I knew what restoration looked like – I’d lived it myself.
In my mid-twenties, I went to several doctors with fatigue, lightheadedness, and gut complaints. My tests were normal – nothing to explain how awful I felt. Like many women, I was offered an antidepressant. I didn’t take it. As a single mom in college, the other answer was “of course you don’t feel well.”
I worked hard at eating what experts called “healthy” – following all the rules of the time. Back then protein was “bad” and carbs were “good.” The only really “good” protein was soy or legumes. I even choked down chalky soy protein shakes, believing my children were depending on me to get better. These shakes were made with soy protein powder and water mixed in a shaker cup. They were awful!
Over the decades I’ve learned what real restoration looks like.

The Secret: Herbal Compost for Your Body
Why the morning restoration tea works
Now I know that just like my garden needed organic matter year after year, my body needs its own kind of “compost” – gentle, nourishing food and herbs that support restoration from the ground up.
Every spring I picked buckets of rocks out of the garden and used them to fill washouts along the old logging roads that crisscross through the woods. And every year I added organic matter to the garden. The garden gave me a harvest even in those first years. God provided abundantly despite poor soil.
Now I have most of the muddy spots on the roads dry, and garden soil my neighbors covet.
The connection is this: even if your current health feels like my original played-out, tired soil, there are many little things you can do to improve it and create vitality.
My Morning Restoration Tea Recipe
Just like I add organic matter to my garden each spring, I start every morning with these four roots that work like compost for my body:
- Dandelion Root
– Supports liver function and natural detoxification
– Helps the body process and eliminate what it doesn’t need
– Like adding rich compost to tired soil
- Burdock Root
– Traditionally used for blood and lymph cleansing
– Supports the body’s natural cleansing systems
– Works gently to help clear accumulated waste
- Marshmallow Root
– Soothes and heals irritated tissues
– The natural mucilage adds body to the tea, giving it a richer, more satisfying texture
– Provides gentle, protective support for digestive tract
– Like adding healing organic matter to damaged soil
- Roasted Chicory
– Supports liver and digestive function
– Adds that satisfying, coffee-like flavor and depth
– Makes the whole blend taste like a warm, comforting morning ritual
- Cinnamon
- Supports healthy blood sugar balance
- Warming and comforting – perfect for morning ritual
- Adds natural sweetness without sugar
- Enhances the overall flavor and makes it feel like a treat
Warming and comforting – perfect for morning ritual. Adds natural sweetness without sugar. Enhances the overall flavor and makes it feel like a treat
How I prepare it:
I make this as a gentle morning tea, often adding a pinch of cinnamon and occasionally some coconut flakes or cacao for extra comfort.
This isn’t about taking heroic doses or dramatic detoxing. It’s about consistent, gentle nourishment – the same way I rebuilt my garden soil one season at a time.
Building Your Foundation
Just like soil restoration, health restoration happens with consistent, patient care. Small daily actions – like drinking nourishing herbal tea, eating real food, moving your body, getting quality sleep – create transformation over time.
Some herbs work like compost for your liver, kidneys, and digestive system. They support your body’s natural restoration processes rather than forcing dramatic changes.
If you’re feeling like depleted farmland – overworked, under-nourished, but still expected to produce – know that restoration is possible. Your body has an incredible capacity to heal when given the right foundation.

Notes
- Storage: Feel free to make a big batch ahead of time. That’s what I do. Store the dried herb blend in an airtight jar, or a decorative tin. It keeps for months and actually gets better as the flavors meld.
- Taste: This isn’t a delicate herbal tea – it’s rich, earthy, and substantial. If it’s too strong, use less herbs or steep for shorter time. Too mild? Add more herbs or steep longer.
- Make it yours: Feel free to add a splash of coconut milk, a drizzle of honey, or a pinch of cacao powder. This is about nourishing yourself, not following rules.
- Sourcing: Look for organic herbs from reputable suppliers. Mountain Rose Herbs or Starwest Botanicals are reliable, or check your local health food store.
- Brewing time: I usually steep 20-30 minutes, but you can go longer depending on how strong you like it.
- Cinnamon stick tip: One stick lasts me about a week of daily tea. Just leave it in your mug or teapot and keep reusing. For a big batch i find the cinnamon granules are so much easier.
- Be patient: Like soil restoration, the benefits build over time with consistent use. This isn’t a quick fix – it’s foundational nourishment.
